Artist Statement

I seek to create objects of beauty and utility for human spaces using contemporary glass crafting techniques and materials with focus on color, form, and design. I create my work with the goal of producing a connection between a person, an object, and its creator. The owner of the work can then translate this experience through story with others. Such experiences are becoming exceedingly rare in our world where we often do not and sometimes cannot understand where or how the objects we live with are made. I am also sustainably minded, in terms of both the environment and the industry. This means I am efficient and conservative with the materials I use, as well as striving to source them as ethically as possible.

Technical

Artist Warren Nelson strives to create objects of contemporary relevancy that capture elegance and beauty through the simplicity of color and form. Warren works primarily with borosilicate, a specific recipe for glass that is known for its durability and resistance to heat and is commonly found in kitchens, laboratories, and optics. Since borosilicate becomes workable around 2000 degrees Fahrenheit and requires a gas/oxygen burner to soften, it proves to be a mesmerizing medium to work with and often yields surprising results. Each piece is made individually by hand and as such no two pieces are identical. Furthermore, glass has been around since ancient Egypt, but borosilicate glass has only been around since 1915, which makes it a relatively new medium of glass to work with.

Bio

My name is Warren Nelson and I am a glass art maker at Warren Nelson Glass. I have been flame-working borosilicate glass for 20 years. In 2007, I graduated from the University of Idaho with a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Graphic Design. Through my college experience, I found my artistic path of using color, form, and design to create objects of beauty and utility for human spaces. Working as a solo artist and with other production teams over the years, I have continued to experiment with new techniques and hone my craft. Recently, I developed a website for my art. I find inspiration in many areas, especially while exploring parks, gardens, and wilderness areas.
